If only I had known those crazy few days were just the tip of the iceburg. A week after writing my last post, my dad was admitted to the cardiac care unit. He was in hospital for a week, travelled to another hospital an hour away, had a stent inserted to correct a 95% blockage of his left coronary artery (they call it the widowmaker, and doctors are amazed he didn't drop dead of a massive heart attack), had a mild heart attack in the recovery room, and was released two days later. Four days after that, he was rushed back to the hospital via ambulance and has been there ever since. The stent they placed to correct the blockage wound up blocking another artery 100%. Five attempts to clear it were unsuccessful. Fortunately (fortunately??) the damage has already been done, as that is what caused his heart attack after the first angiogram. We are now awaiting word on the pacemaker my dad needs for another problem they've discovered called Sinus Node Disease. They don't want to insert the pacemaker right now, as his heart needs time to heal, but if they decide it is urgent enough they will do it anyway.
So that explains my absence from blog world. My days have been spent running back and forth to the hospital, making sure my mom has everything she needs (she's been staying with us), oh - and not to mention - everyday life with two busy little boys.
Dad will likely be released from hospital tomorrow, and head back home to Doaktown an hour from here. There is some comfort having him nearby and knowing they're watching his every move (and heart beat)! So, although it will be good for life to get back to normal for everyone involved, I'm not terribly anxious for him to be discharged.
I'll leave you with a picture we took on Valentine's Day, of Grandpa with his boys. We snuck them into the cardiac care unit to deliver some treats. My dad was thrilled, as were the boys. They love their Grandpa so much, and have really missed him while he's been in hospital.
Wow! Heidi, you sure have had a tough time of it. I am sorry you dad is going through all this. I really think, at times, that is it tougher to see our parents in trouble than our kids... you know what I mean? I love this picture of your dad and the boys... they sure look a lot like him! I hope Clinton is doing well, we kind of thought maybe he ended up with more severe injuries than you thought from his accident and that's why we hadn't seen you in a while. I am glad to hear that your dad is showing some improvement.
ReplyDeleteLove you,
Kat
Mom told us about this. Wow, sure a lot at one time. Love the picture of the boys with your dad. Hope your dad's doing better soon.

What a sweet picture of the boys with your dad. How is he doing now? I'm so glad you have a blog! I'm much better at checking blogs than facebook :) Love ya!
ReplyDeleteSince this post, my dad experienced the thrill of yet another trip to Fredericton via ambulance - this time because his heart was in atrial fibrillation (beating too fast) and he was experiencing unstable angina. Another week in hospital and he was set loose once again. The problem is, they can't treat the angina agressively until he gets the pacemaker, because the medications that treat angina also affect the heartrate. He gets his pacemaker on the 18th. We're just holding our breath until then.
ReplyDeleteHeidi...Joe emailed me to let me know about your Dad. I wish I were closer... please let me know if there's anything I can do. I'll be holding you and your family in my prayers. Love you. Lez xoxo
